Cave Creek Unified School District's Downward Spiral Accelerates

The downward spiral accelerates:

At the May 13, 2008 Board Meeting, it was announced that CCUSD received a letter of resignation from Dr. Marvin Christensen effectively immediately. We are truly appreciative of the service Dr. Christensen provided to the students of our district by serving in this capacity.

  1. Im a student at CSHS and our school is going down the tube...we've dropped from 4th in the state (a few years ago), to something like 28th. Our school does very little for bright students (who are the ones who bring up the average GPA, so the school can get funding from the state)...Just an example: CSHS wastes money on petty parking passes and worthless "guards" (3 old people) to enforce them...I say lay them off before teachers! Our school is already jam packed and now classes will get even bigger! GREAT. CCUSD is a district surrounded by those wealthy in capital....take advantage!

  2. Dear Student,

Thank you for your comment. There is no question the district is lacking for gifted students. In fact there is little gifted opportunity in the middle schools and in the elementary schools they do just the minimum with no separate gifted program.

  3. It doesn't seem as if CCUSD has a clear direction. It seems as if it is just spinning its wheels trying to figure out who they are. There is no strong leadership or mission. As for "Students First ... People Always", that's such a hypocritical motto considering the recent actions of the district.

  4. Anonymous @ May 18, 2008 3:07 PM, thanks for the comments.

Other than IB (with its questionable 'world view') the district has done nothing to improve academic achievement. It has spent all its resources trying to feed its edifice complex while hiding behind the 'EXCELLING' smoke screen.

For some reason the administrators and board think that buildings, more administrators, laptops, and white boards make for a great school district. This could not be further from the truth. A strong curriculum and experienced teachers make a great school.

A drop in enrollment and the house of cards has come tumbling down. Even hiring a PR person couldn't stop the descent.

Too bad. At least we live in a state with academic choices including open enrollment, home schooling, and charter schools. If have children enrolled in CCUSD, you may want to check those choices out.

  5. In regards to school choice, don't forget about private schools. My child was in CCUSD in elementary school. It seemed the district condoned mediocre standards in its educational philosophies. During his middle school years we enrolled him at Bella Vista Private School in Cave Creek and appreciate having the opportunity for school choice.

  6. Dear May 19, 2008 9:18 PM,

You are correct. Ask any principal or anyone in the curriculum department and they tell you that CCUSD conforms to the state standards. The CCUSD web site even directs you to the state curriculum standards.

Well the teachers and community expect CCUSD to EXCEED state standards. We live in an affluent community where 90% of children attend preschool. For some reason CCUSD thinks that Smart Boards will magically increase academic achievement.

Hey CCUSD; IT'S THE CURRICULUM, STUPID
