CCUSD Fact Check: Does the starting teacher salary in CCUSD qualify one for food stamps?

What was said: Starting salary in district would qualify new teacher for food stamps

Who said it: Candidates for CCUSD Governing Board according to Arizona Republic reporter Mary Beth Faller.

Facts:  Entry level salary for CCUSD teacher for 2012-2013 is $29020, not including 301 and other money (up to $3800 according to this).

A 22 year old single person making $29020, paying $800 in rent, and living in 85331 and having no other assets is NOT eligible for food stamps (now called Nutrition Assistance) according to the AZ Supplemental Nutrition calculator web site.

Verdict: These candidate are mistaken. The income limit for even a family of 3 is $21,040, significantly lower than the $29020 (or $32382 with 301 and other monies). You can argue that this is not enough (seems like enough for a new grad, fresh out of college with no experience and includes a pension and free health care for about 38 weeks of work)  but you cannot say that the pay is within the food stamp eligibility threshold.

  1. You do not have your facts straight. It was clearly stated at the meeting by Mr. Kules that this is for a married teacher with 2 children. You are again being a CCUSD hater, not a CCUSD Watcher. AZCentral has the story straight, why don't you try reading it, you might learn something. http://www.azcentral.com/community/scottsdale/articles/2012/10/05/20121005cave-creek-school-board-candidates.html
