Craigslist Don't Fail Us Now!


And you thought we were teasing about Craigslist...

Spanish-Speaking Social Studies Teacher, 6th Grade (Cave Creek, AZ)


We are a public middle school looking for a 6th grade social studies teacher who is fluent in Spanish. The applicant would teach one section of social studies in Spanish for a Spanish Immersion class (students who are fluent in English, but who have been in Spanish Immersion classes since kindergarten)and three sections of social studies in English. This is a full-time position with benefits.

  4. Craigslist is not only an acceptable source for job postings now, but in some cities it is the major source for job postings. This is especially true for some types of postings in the San Francisco and Silicon Valley area.
    While we like to think of Craigslist as being a local posting tool, it is possible that a well qualified applicant from out of state who is looking for work in the Phoenix area, would see the posting as well.

  6. In all honesty, if they have to go to Craigs List to hire someone, they should be ashamed of themselves. They laid off HOW MANY teachers? They can't advertise on their own website or at the schools that offer credential programs? Craigslist may be acceptable in some cities, but the jobs that I saw on that list are a joke here in Phx.

    Doesn't it bother anyone else on here that Tacy Ashby retired, took all of her benefits and earnings and then was hired back as a contractor??? Do you realize contractors cost MORE than a FTE? And this district is losing money and laying off teachers but we are paying more for someone who has helped to screw up this district?

  7. Do your homework 2:16 p.m. it is on the CCUSD website, the Arizona Department of Education website and all the other educational websites. Do the people that got laid off meet the open job requirements? They know where to look, some of them have been hired back. What does the state of CCUSD's supposed disarray have to do with Craigslist?

  8. Sonoran News has been running a poll about the issue that 2:16pm raises with Tacy Ashby. I'm sure that much to the chagrin of SN, most people are voting that it is alright for public employees to collect retirement benefits while continuing to work in the same capacity.

  12. Honeymom - what kind of dialogue can the Watch expect with a post like this? "Craigslist Don't Fail Us Now!" Are you kidding me? What does this have to do with the CURRICULUM? What is their purpose? To destroy the district? What are they doing to improve anything? They have not offered anything but critism, sarcasm, we don't know who they are, they refuse to reveal their composition (no matter how many requests they get) and, quite frankly, I find it extremely disrespectful at times. Just wanted to give their "tough skin" a pinch of their own medicine. As for your comments, Honeymom, well thought out and we thank you.

  13. 6:33 p.m., I like your post with your constructive criticism. If the district is truly sinking as CCUSDWatch says it is then EVERY SINGLE RESIDENT who lives in this district is going down with the ship. Real Estate values will go down etc. etc. Though, as you stated, I don't see anyone from this group or their affiliates stepping up to the plate to run. They can't convince me that every single one of their members is affiliated with the district so none of them could run this November. Otherwise if that were true, perhaps that would prove that this website is run only by a few people maybe even only one person.

    It's easy to for CCUSDWatch to say that they could come in and save the district but I can only imagine if any of them actually became a member of the board how they would see that it's not all a walk in the park.

    Sitting on the sidelines is always easier than actually participating in the race.

  15. You've focused on a spanish immersion/social studies opening when there are many other openings listed on the CCUSD website and at least one other listed on craigslist (8th grade english). I wonder why you've chosen to focus on one but not the other?

    Does 'looking for an 8th grade english teacher on craigslist' fail to provide enough potential for controversy for you?

    Craigslist sounds like a good no-cost recruitment option. Good for CCUSD ~ shout it from the rooftops if it means that they'll find people who want to teach our children and who'll do the job well.

    CCUSD Watch has so many solutions, how would you solve this hiring issue? Remember, as your own back to school countdown clock shows, times a wastin'...

    No, we have offered analysis, evidence, exposure, solutions, suggestions, and feedback. Sometimes in the form of a spreadsheet, sometimes in the form of a satirical post.

    We are not a PR firm or a $60K/year part time PIO. We are here to give and get the straight scoop and to make it clear that this @$#% has got to stop and that this district needs to get back to the business of educating our children.

    It would help if you would steer clear of sensationalism. I know that you don't like to see yourself labeled as a journalist, but you do engage in tactics of journalism - i.e. attention grabbing headlines, distortion of stories, satirical humor. Plus, it would be helpful, since you have district contacts, for you to do some fact checking on some of your stories.

    Can't we just engage in discussions of issues? You have a lot of really good things to say, but you are angering a lot of people who might be more likely to listen to you if you move away from the teasing and self-righteousness. Wouldn't that be most productive and beneficial?

  19. The Spanish Immersion program at the middle level is bound to fail. The AP at DAMS and the administrator they cut at the district office level are the ones who organized the program beyond the one at DSES, and both of them are now gone.

While I have nothing against Spanish immersion, I have a real problem with resources being thrown at it when regular classroom teachers have had to be cut, orchestra has been cut, not enough money for supplies, etc. Spanish immersion in the middle school will benefit the kids at DWES who are currently part of it. But, I don't see the benefits of it if it is at the expense of the larger student population throughout the district. Make sure that our other needs are taken care of first, before throwing more money at spanish immersion.

  21. How are they throwing money at spanish immersion? Those kids would be in CCUSD classrooms anyway. Why not make them classrooms where kids are also doing second language learning?

    In fact, I believe the program gained outside grant support with which they now impact every student at DWES (not just SI) with some second language exposure.

    SI accepts open enrollment. So while the program is housed at DWES - it includes kids who would be attending other district schools if they'd not chosen to take part in SI. Correct? How is this an added expense?

    SI started with an excellent principal with vision and families who trusted enough to take a chance on something new to positively impact students.

    Isn't that what you'd want in a district? And isn't it wise to pilot it at one school instead of impacting whole district before you can prove success?

    Why predict failure at the middle school? If that's the case, maybe someone should look at the middle schools and figure out what's happening there because they seem to have made it work very well at the elementary level.

    So well in fact that I believe other districts in AZ including PV and Scottsdale are looking to actually model things after the CCUSD program. Imagine that, something good coming from us going to them!

    By the way, I have no children in this program, so I bring no bias to the table.

  22. If they can figure out a way to do it at a middle school and also fund the things that I mentioned, I would be all for it. I just want the district to prioritize and solve some budget issues before it does massive realignment. I am not convinced that putting spanish immersion into DAMS will not cost money. I am well aware of the grant that is helping to fund it at DWES, but can one presume that such funding will be available again and for DAMS? On the other hand, I don't support the other poster's contention that it would be doomed to failure. I think that the the DWES program is proof that our district can successfully execute a Spanish Immersion Program.

    My biggest concern for this district is that they not get sidetracked with well intentioned, but overly ambitious bonds. We have a lot of issues with voters in this area and we will really lose as a district if we can't get anything passed, even the most important things like the k-3 overide. I think that bonds need to be kept simple and not overwhelm the electorate. We also need to figure out how to mobilize our parents into action and that will require more than just phone banks.

    Keep things simple. Get the important things passed. Then try for the bigger things. I hate to sound cliche, but timing is everything.

  23. Honeymom, great post! One way to possibly mobilize parents would to have the PTO at every school, at every grade level, help educate the community. Maybe a series of evening meetings either at the schools or in homes hosted by various PTO members. PTO members would need to have all information relevant to whatever was on the ballot and be prepared to answer questions. Several "town hall" meetings to meet the various time constraints of the community. It would also be important to seek out the "snow birds", the community of Troon, and those who feel the SN is "word".

  24. I don't know if we will ever change the minds of those who think that "SN" is the word. While it is just my hunch, that group is vehemently anti-development at its core and they have determined that reducing our schools to third world funding will halt development in its tracks. While I disagree with this tactic, I sympathize over the way the character of this area has changed and understand their concerns.

    I agree about reaching out to the community more. I was struck in doing some research that a local senior mentioned that she just didn't have much info on the bond election. I think we should reach into Troon, Terravita, Winfield, Desert Mountain, etc. I think we have more potential for votes.

    I also think that the PTO's will have to put out written info to the parents as well as the chats. The chats with the administration/boe members just aren't enough. Once on the ballot, school district members cannot only answer simple factual questions about the bonds. We need parents, whether on PTO or not, armed with information and ready to speak passionately about the bond.

  26. Spanish Immersion will fail at the middle school because everyone who was involved in creating the program is now gone. The principal at DAMS had nothing to do with its organization. I believe the ones who created the program are the AP at DAMS who left the district (smart move), one of the administrators they let go in the budget cuts, and the grant coordinator from DWES. Did anyone notice they changed the SI post from science to social studies? That's evidence they don't know what they're doing!

  27. I see that SI is officially starting this fall at DAMS (I must be under a rock, but it is funny that with a child at DAMS I never heard anything about it).

    I don't see that any grant money has been secured for it, but perhaps I am still under a rock.

    How is the district paying for the extra bus service to bring STMS zoned SI kids to DAMS since I see that is a component? Are there any other costs budgeted to this?

  28. I looked all over DAMS site, what is new, etc. No mention of SI there even though it is clearly talked about at DWES site.

    I think there will be parents who will have a fit if there is a bus for SI students while no late bus anymore. While I did not depend on that late bus, I know of a number of parents who did.

  30. It wasn't completely clear whether the grant is funding middle school or not since a cross between plan a and plan b was decided upon.

    Here are the potential issues:

    1) CCUSD funding transpo for these students (it looks like it will be about 50 students a year) when it no longer provides late transpo for the larger student population many of whom need it so they can attend office hours.

    2) There is an opening for a middle school science teacher, yet now it looks like another social studies teacher is being hired. Will there be 2 or 3 6th grade social studies teachers? It looks like other grades do not have teachers for both teams. Are we hiring an extra social studies teacher just so we can have si when we obvioiusly lost some other teachers to budget cuts?

    3) It's great that DWES parents were kept in the loop. I see a real problem in that DAMS parents weren't. If there are budget implications for the school, amidst the cutbacks at DAMS, the parents should have been given the opportunity to weigh in.

    4) Ultimately, the district needs to weigh what is in the best interest of the most children. It is hard for me to fathom how the best interest of the greater student population at DAMS is served by this.

    I am not anti SI and hope this middle school expansion is all being covered by Christina's grant money in which case I have no issues. I know a number of parents and children in the program and have met Christina and spoken to her about her involvement in obtaining the grant. It is a great program. But, I want to make sure that the district is prioritizing and that the needs of the larger student population are not being hurt to be able to expand si.

    Hopefully, someone on here can better explain the funding for this at the middle school level.

    I would hope that by increasing the number of dual language educators, an increased opportunity to learn a foreign language would follow. If a teacher is to teach social studies in Spanish for DWES-SI students, couldn’t the next hour’s class be taught to students who want to start learning Spanish in an immersion or partial-immersion format? I see an expansion opportunity for students who attend DAMS in the same way it has benefited DWES students outside of the immersion classrooms. Another benefit would be that you have some on-site peer support with the SI students for students who will be taking the basic, 9-week wheel Spanish.

    As for transportation, no guarantees were given and I believe all participating parents knew this might or might not come together. Parents who want to attend DAMS next year, whether they are in Spanish Immersion or not, will find a way to get there children where they need to go.

    There appears to be a programming switch from a Spanish language science class to a Spanish language social studies class. If anything, it affects what honors classes might be available to Spanish Immersion students. The teacher numbers are not affected by this change.

    Sometimes it is hard to gauge how to communicate and where to communicate changes. I do know that at several governing board meetings, the continuation of Spanish Immersion to DAMS was presented and discussed. The DWES Spanish Immersion web site also contains the information. To my knowledge, there is no financial impact. There is no increase or decrease in staffing associated with the program. It is all handled through scheduling. That may be why you did not receive or find any information.

    Given the possible school reconfigurations to K-6 and one middle school (7-8) on the table, these items will adjust and change. It is doubtful how it looks this year will be the same the next year or the year after

  32. As an SI parent, I have strong concerns about the program at DAMS this coming year.

    I went to the presentation DAMS held earlier in the year. It appeared that the three people who created the SI plan were Cristina, the assistant principal at DAMS Erik Francis, and Monica Milinovich, who was an administrator from district office.

    Now I understand Mr. Francis and Mrs. Milinovich are no longer with the district, so it is unclear who is in charge of SI at DAMS.

    I was not encouraged by what was said by the principal, Ann Orlando, or the other district office administrators present at the meeting. It seemed that Cristina, Mr. Francis, and Mrs. Milinovich were the ones who knew what do with SI. Those are the three who kept in touch with us parents and kept us informed. Now only Cristina is left. Does anyone know why the other two left?

    I'm also not encouraged by the new assistant principal at DAMS, Bill Dolezal. I looked into the school he came from, which does not have Spanish Immersion. Does he have any idea what SI requires? Will he change the plan made earlier in the year since he is the new assistant principal?

    It's almost a month until school starts, and DAMS does not have an SI teacher yet. Will it be science or social studies? Who will it be in 7th and 8th grade? Will SI be a part of this K-8 academy the district is proposing? What happens to SI if STMS becomes the only middle school in the district? Those are the questions that need to be answered. I have called and e-mailed the school and district office, but no one returns my calls. I know it's summer, but someone could respond.

  33. As I said, I have no problem with SI.

    But, the district has huge budget issues. The kids in SI might be assured of decent classroom sizes. Meanwhile, a see a gap for science and math teachers for the 7th grade. I have a child in that grade and wonder, will one teacher teach both teams. If my child winds up in classrooms with 35 students for math and science, while there is an extra social studies teacher for 6th graders and spanish immersion kids, I will be upset. I wish it weren't that way and proper staffing at all levels, as well as SI could be accomplished.

    As to the people overseeing the program, Christina strikes me as very capable and probably the person most on top of the program. That is less of a concern to me although I am not in the program.
